Making the beaches cleaner

The Bridgetown District Scout Committee joined with several other NGOs to participate in this year’s International Coastal Cleanup 2012.

The clean up targeted several location over the island; however, the Bridgetown District Scout Committee cleaned the stretch of beach along Silver Rock. The group of five leaders and 27 Scouts took on this challenge. Equipped with gloves, and garbage bags the scouts were divided into groups of four and proceeded along the 400 metre stretch of beach collecting items such as plastic bags, plastic containers, used car tyres and pieces of metal, just to name a few.

The scouts returned with five bags of recyclable items and five bags of non-recyclable items which were weighed and tagged before being placed in the skips provided for this event. For most of the boys it was their first experience taking part in such an activity and they expressed the satisfaction in being able to maintain a healthy environment.
