Teen mum gunned down

ST JOHN’S — Murdered young mom Melissa Rose dreamt of becoming a politician – ploughing her energy throughout her school years at Ottos Comprehensive and Antigua State College towards achieving that goal.

Just last year, Melissa – who would have turned 20 in three weeks – graduated from college with passes in three A level subjects, among them politics.

But on Wednesday night those dreams ended with her tragic death when she was gunned down in front of her John Hughes home around 10:30 pm – minutes after returning from work as a booking agent at Sandals Grande Resort.

Witnesses said an assailant opened fire on the pick-up in which Rose was a front seat passenger along with her male companion. She was reportedly struck in the left breast.

The shooter apparently fled the scene on foot before getting away in a car parked around the corner from the victim’s home, a resident said.

Police are currently questioning a male suspect who reportedly turned himself in early Thursday morning.

Smiling through grief

Relatives, colleagues and friends smiled through tears yesterday as they remembered Melissa’s laughter, willingness to help others, drive for higher learning and love for her 10-month-old daughter.

“She always helped me with my homework and wanted us (her siblings) to be successful in school and in everything we did. We spent a lot of time together even though she was older,” Rose’s 14-year-old sister said. (Antigua Observer)
