Rihanna paints MTV red

Barbadian superstar Rihanna was the toast of this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.

She won the coveted title of Video of the Year for her hit We Found Love featuring Calvin Harris.

Even before she accepted her award, Rihanna had the Staples Centre in Los Angeles last night heated when she opened the show with what was described by many as her “saucy” performance of a medley of song.

With a new boyish cut hairdo, the Bajan lass wore a body hugging spicy red leather pants with a sheer red top and a black and red snake skin head piece, accessorised with gold jewellery to stun the audience with her sultry performance of songs, which included: her new number Cockiness (I Love It) with rapper A$AP Rocky and the award-winning hit We Found Love.

Arriving earlier, on the red carpet the singer was simply breathtaking. Rocking the new dark cropped “do”, she looked refreshed. She wore a flowing white backless floor-length gown. The dress was adorned with a knot detail at the waist which flattered Rihanna’s slender figure. With no accessories, she kept the look simple and elegant. It was topped with luscious red lipstick.

British boy band One Direction was also a big hit last night. They won three awards, Best Pop Video, Best New Artist and Most Share-Worthy Video for What Makes You Beautiful.

Openly gay R&B singer Frank Ocean did a good job of Thinking About You and host and comedian Kevin Hart was hilarious.

Other winners included were: BEST FEMALE VIDEO — Nicki Minaj: Starships

BEST HIP-HOP VIDEO — Drake featuring Lil Wayne

BEST MALE VIDEO — Chris Brown: Turn Up The Music

BEST VIDEO WITH A MESSAGE — Demi Lovato: Skyscraper

BEST ART DIRECTION — Katy Perry: Wide Awake

BEST CHOREOGRAPHY — Chris Brown: Turn Up The Music
