Isaac drenches The Bahamas

NASSAU — Tropical Storm Isaac brought heavy rain and wind to the country over the weekend, but there were no reports of major damage, the National Emergency Management Agency said.

The storm lashed New Providence with rain late Saturday night and parts of yesterday, uprooted some trees, whipped branches off others and left some areas flooded.

Andros was placed under a hurricane watch on Saturday, which meant that hurricane conditions were possible within 26 to 36 hours. Officials at NEMA said that rough seas and bad weather brought on by the storm caused a sloop with nearly 200 illegal Haitian immigrants on board to run aground in Mangrove Cay, Andros Saturday evening.
