24-year-old shot dead
PORT OF SPAIN — A 24-year-old man was shot dead in front of his Laventille home on Sunday afternoon. Nigel Clinton, of Building Three, Dorata Street, Laventille became the second resident of his community to be killed by gunmen after the murder of 11-year-old Kareem Alphonso who was killed on Saturday morning.
According to reports, around 5:20 p.m. on Sunday evening, Clinton was standing near to his home when he noticed a stranger walking through the community. Clinton reportedly confronted the stranger, who drew a firearm and shot him several times in the head and upper body.
He was found lying in a gutter by neighbours who responded to the volley of gunshots. He was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital but pronounced dead on arrival. Residents told investigators that Clinton’s attacker may have fled through a track which adjoins the Housing Development Corporation building complex.
Homicide detectives believe that Clinton was not the gunman’s target but instead was in the “wrong place at the wrong time”.
Investigators are working on the theory that the gunman’s target was another resident who is a suspect in Alphonso’s murder. Alphonso’s father Barry is currently on remand awaiting trial for murder. Alphonso died around midday on Saturday after being shot near his home almost 12 hours earlier. He was liming with his friends, Jacob Peters and Justin Abraham, both 18, along Dorata Street when they were all shot by a unmasked gunman.
Peters died at the scene of the shooting, while Abraham who was shot in the arms, was treated at hospital and discharged.
In another incident on Saturday night, another resident, Anton Alves, 24, was shot dead while attending a wake at Alphonso’s house. All four killings have been classified as gang-related by police. The murder toll for the year so far stands at 276. (Guardian)
