Mixed results for Bajans

Barbados’ badminton players had mixed results over the weekend at the CAREBACO International Championships in Santo Domingo

Shari Watson lost her women’s singles quarter-final match against the no. 2 seed Charmaine Reid (Canada) 21-10, 21-9, while Andre Padmore and Kevin Wood lost to the Jamaican pair of Gareth Henry and Garron Palmer in a close game 21-23, 21-16, 21-12.

Kevin Wood and Sabrina Scott also lost 21-16, 21-10 to the No. 2 seed Surinamese pair of Wongsodikromo and Crystal Leefmans in the quarter finals of the mixed doubles.

In the juniors competition Barbados’ Nicolas Howard and Makenzie Howard won 21-15, 22-20 against Samuel Rosado and Greylis Figuereo to reach the semi-finals, while the ever-improving Amanda Haywood won 21-1, 21-4 against Escarlet Sanchez to also reach semi-finals.

Haywood then teamed up with Shae Martin 21-9,21-8 to defeat Rafeli Perez and Anny Sanchez 21-9, 21-8 to reach the mixed doubles semi-finals.

In Under-15 action Daniel Duncan and Shae Martin won 21-8, 21-9 against Justin Taylor and Dejon Wright to reach the semi-finals.

In Under-17 competition Barbadian duo Derion Hurley and D’Andre Thorpe won 21-16, 21-18 against Joselito Sanchez & Pedro Zapata to also reach the semi-finals. (PR)
