Seniors win badminton bronze

Barbados’ senior badminton team won the bronze medal at the CAREBACO Badminton Team event which concluded on Tuesday in Santo Domingo, while the junior badminton team just missed out on the bronze medal position finishing fourth in the overall standings.

The Junior Open badminton event got underway on Wednesday and Barbados’ juniors showed their worth with Amanda Haywood thrashing Escarlet Sanchez (Dominican Republic) 21-1, 21-4 to reach the Under-13 girls semi-finals.

Haywood then teamed up with partner Shae Martin in the Under-15 mixed doubles, to beat Perez and Sanchez (Dominican Republic) 21-13, 21-19.

Also in winners’ row were Nicholas & Mckenzie Howard (B’dos) who beat Samuel Rosado & Greylis Figuereo (DOM) 21-15, 23-21 to reach the semi-finals of the Under-11 mixed doubles.

Shae Martin and Daniel Duncan (B’dos) also beat Wilmer Brea & Luis De La Cruz (DOM) 19-21 ,21-13 , 21-19 in Under-15 boys’ doubles action.

Derion Hurley and D’Andre Thorpe (B’dos) defeated Joselite Sanchez & Pedro Zapata (Puerto Rico) 21-16 , 21-18 to reach the semi-finals of the Under-17 boys doubles.

The tournament, which includes juniors, team event and international open, concludes on Sunday. (PR)
