Gayle's in, Fidel's out

Chris Gayle is in. Fidel Edwards is out.

The West Indies opener is set to play his first Test in more than 18 months after being named in the West Indies squad for the first Test against New Zealand on Wednesday.

Gayle has not played Test cricket since the tour of Sri Lanka in December 2010.

Edwards, hitherto the West Indies lead strike bowler, has been in below-par form of late with lingering question marks over his fitness and ability to last a five-day Test. Pacer Tino Best has been preferred to Edwards.

The 13-man squad does not include batsman Darren Bravo, who is still recovering from a thigh strain sustained during the England tour. Sunil Narine is the only spinner in the squad, despite fellow off-spinner’s Shane Shillingford’s five-wicket haul for the President’s XI against the visitors in Antigua.
