Celebrating success

Reigning Party Monarch Mikey

While they may not have painted the town red today, the members of Celebration Time tent are pleased with having landed five people in this year’s Party Monarch Finals.

Five of the finalists — Khiomal, Khiomal and Peter Coppin, Edwin, Lil’ Rick, and Rameses — were among the nine artists announced in the early hours of today by the National Cultural Foundation’s Acting Corporate Communications Specialist, Andre Hoyte.

Manager of the four year old tent, Peter Boyce, told Barbados TODAY that he was “elated at their success”.

“I’m a little puzzled as to how it is that of the quality entrants which we had for Pic-O-De-Crop competition that we did not have any persons selected for that competition. When it comes to the Party Monarch competition, I believe that the best selections were made.

“We always know and we accept the fact that in Celebration Time we are more focussed when it comes to party and we are a quality entertainment and music tent in Celebration Time and the selection, and our dominance in the area of the Party Monarch competition demonstrates that superiority,” he said.

Boyce said he was “especially elated” about Rameses being included given that he had tried unsuccessfully over the years.

“He’s been trying for a number of years and we believe that this is one of his best years. There have been times before when he had songs that were quite excellent that we thought would have been a sure thing and he was overlooked so we think this year he made a good effort and we’re glad that the judges were able to recognise that and select him, ” the tent manager said.

The other finalists are: TC (De ADC/Digicel Big Show) Blood (Headliners) Villain (House of Soca) and Slim Jim (De Experience Tent).

Reigning Pic-O-De- Crop Monarch, Popsicle from the House of Soca is the reserve.

The artists will go up against reigning Party Monarch, Mikey, on July 29 at the MQI/98.1the One Soca Royale event at Bushy Park in an effort to wrest the title from him. (DS)
